OpenAI launches its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5

OpenAI, the U.S.-based artificial intelligence research centre, released its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, on 7 August 2025.

According to OpenAI's official website, this is the most powerful artificial intelligence system the organisation has ever launched. It outperforms previous models in various benchmark tests and demonstrates industry-leading performance in programming, mathematics, writing, health, and visual perception. It also makes significant progress in reducing hallucinations (erroneous generation), enhancing instruction execution capabilities, and reducing ‘flattery’ tendencies.

OpenAI stated that GPT-5 employs a unified system architecture, integrating an efficient base model, deep reasoning modules, and a real-time routing system. It can determine when to respond quickly and when to engage in deep reasoning to provide expert-level answers based on different situations.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described GPT-5 as ‘the best model in the world,’ representing a ‘significant step forward’ for OpenAI in its development of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

According to the announcement, GPT-5 is available to users free of charge, but users with different subscription tiers have varying levels of access and functionality. For example, Pro subscribers can use the more powerful GPT-5 Pro version.

NBC News reported that GPT-5's new features appear to primarily improve upon existing capabilities of ChatGPT and other AI systems. The report cited an OpenAI spokesperson as saying that GPT-5 still faces ‘key limitations in areas such as persistent memory, autonomy, and cross-task adaptability.’ TechCrunch, a U.S. technology news outlet, noted in its report: ‘GPT-5 appears to be roughly on par with other cutting-edge AI models in multiple areas. Whether the model truly outperforms its competitors remains to be seen.
