Nationwide protests erupt across the United States, drawing 7 million participants.
On the 18th local time, massive protests erupted across the United States, with 7 million participants voicing discontent over the current administration's policies on legislation, immigration, and healthcare.
This marks the third nationwide demonstration since President Trump returned to the White House and may be the largest to date.
The U.S. federal government is now entering its third week of shutdown due to a budget impasse. With some public institutions closed and federal employees forced to take unpaid leave, citizens' lives have been disrupted, further fueling anger and discontent.
At the Washington protest site, some furloughed federal employees joined the march carrying signs reading “Protesters Owed Wages.”
Organizers stated that while June saw protests at approximately 2,100 registered locations nationwide, this demonstration took place at over 2,600 sites across all 50 states.
Organizers estimated nearly 7 million people participated in the demonstrations on the 18th. U.S. media noted that, as with most large-scale events, the participant count may be adjusted following expert verification. However, if the 7 million figure holds, it would rank among the largest protests in the U.S. in 60 years.
The protests spread across nearly every major U.S. city, with several Democratic politicians joining the demonstrations. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders participated in Washington, D.C., while Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker joined the protests in Chicago.
Additionally, people gathered outside U.S. embassies in Berlin, Rome, Paris, and Sweden to show solidarity with American protesters. Organizers stated on their website: " President (Trump) believes his rule is absolute. But in America, we have no kings, and we will not back down in the face of chaos, corruption, and cruelty."
Regarding the protests, House Speaker Kevin Johnson, a Republican, denounced them as “anti-American” gatherings. President Trump left Washington on the 17th to spend the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
On the evening of the 18th, Trump released an AI-generated satirical video. In the clip, Trump, wearing a crown and piloting a fighter jet, “drops mud” on the protesting crowd.
